Ask Before Hiring

OK, I got the budget, now how can I tell one Bagpiper’s talents from another?

1) What level do you (bagpiper) currently compete in?
Our answer: Grade 1/Open Professional (Highest Level)

2) Do you (bagpiper) have any recordings of you piping that we can hear?
Our answer: Yes

If the price is “too good” to be true, listen to a recording of them. Then listen to one of our recordings. If you cannot tell the difference, then you should have a good Bagpiper.

From start up to finish, the Bagpipe should sound pleasant, warm, exciting, not loud, harsh, high pitched and squeaky.

The Hidden Costs:

Preparation & Expertise

While a performance might only last 15 minutes, a professional piper invests a minimum of 4 hours into every single booking. This includes:

Tuning & Maintenance: 1 hour to ensure the drones and chanter are perfectly in tune with the day’s humidity and temperature.

Uniform/Dress: 1 hour to properly don the traditional Highland dress.

Travel: 1 hour (average) round trip.

Instrument Care: 1 hour post-event to clean and dry the pipes (essential for wooden instruments).

The 10,000 Hour Rule: This doesn’t account for the decade-plus of daily practice required to reach the “Open” grade.

Not All Bagpipers Are Equal

All Bagpipers have the opportunity to develop their skills through competitions.
